NAME: Leo
AGE: Unspecified, appears to be in his late teens/early twenties.
CANON: Fire Emblem: Fates
CANON HISTORY: wiki
CANON PERSONALITY:
It’s probably normal that princes don’t dress themselves. They have attendants and retainers to do everything for them. It was, of course, the case for Corrin the sheltered prince/ss who couldn’t boil a pot of tea, but still a normal person would be able to at least put their clothes on the right way.
Unfortunately the second prince of Nohr missed that skill somewhere in all the vast knowledge and talents he possesses, so much that his first appearance on screen is emphasized by his inside out collar. He’s grouchy in the mornings, loves tomatoes more than anybody, and he would much prefer being inside with a good book than prancing out in the sun where it’s hot.
What’s a character without faults, though. Leo’s faults and quirks only accentuate his primary traits further. First and foremost, he’s a prince. He carries himself with the air royalty should have - regal, aloof, cold. It’s a carefully crafted exterior Leo built for himself with careful consideration of everything that he is. He’s smart, a genius at magecraft, an expert tactician, an avid history scholar, a soldier who carries out his mission with a logical mindset. His approach to everything is rarely emotional, but calculated with every factor involved. In a way, it’s almost cruel, when his personal skill allows higher damage output against an already injured enemy, as to make quick, efficient work of them. In contrast with Corrin, Leo shows little mercy to his enemies, executing them regardless of their pleas as exemplified in the case of Zola.
Fates is a game centered around familial relationship with heavy focus on the choices that the protagonist makes. But no matter the route, everyone loves Corrin fully. Even Leo, with his underlying jealousy of Corrin and the painful betrayal he felt in Birthright, holds the protagonist very dear to his heart. There’s that saying about how lonely it is to be a genius, but in Leo’s case it’s a loneliness he actually created for himself, subconsciously, of course. He’s well aware of his capabilities, but it is also the reason he arrives at to explain why his siblings doted so much more on Corrin and not him. He believes that because he’s so capable, that they never felt the need to show him affection or worry after him like Corrin who was locked up in a fortress, never being able to do anything for themselves. It’s also because Leo is so capable that he feels it’s unfit to voice his needs, his desire to be spoiled by his older siblings.
There is a bit of an inferiority complex housed deep inside Leo - one that is always comparing himself to Xander, the crown prince, his brother, his inspiration and goal. It’s been a long unspoken desire of Leo’s to surpass the one that has always seemed so perfect, so infallible. Xander remains out of reach, superior in sword skills, and that was what pushed Leo to study the art of magic just so he could be set apart, to be his own person. Even though he is an exceptional mage in his own rights, Leo still feels inferior to Xander in many ways. He defers to him often, thinking that Xander’s opinion outweighs his own, so much that he doesn’t even speak up at war councils because he believes that whatever he says would be disregarded. That complex eventually gets resolved in his support with Xander, but it is still a major factor shaping Leo into who he is.
While he considers himself Corrin’s intellectual superior and uses that as a basis for the difference in treatment between them, at the same time it does not mean he’s arrogant. He’s simply objective and fair. And for a prince, he does not hold social status to much importance when speaking to others below his station. As cold and ruthless as Leo is towards his enemies, his animosity must be rightfully earned, whether by being from an enemy country or simply by being dishonorable. While Nohr has the not-so-stellar reputation of harboring scoundrels, Leo holds himself and every other soldier to a standard of ethics and morality. He would not hesitate to kill even someone who is, in all technicality, his ally, if they showed to be a disgrace.
He judges others by their merit and character, most notably by the circumstances in which he and Niles met. A prince taking a thief as his retainer is unheard of, but that was how Niles came to enter Leo’s services. Odin also went through several tests of ability before Leo could accept him fully. Many of his support conversations revolve around Leo seeing the worth of of every person regardless of status and background, whether it be a maid or a common farm girl. He knows how to draw out a person's potential, place then where they're needed, so they could utilize the best of their abilities. It's an essential skill for a tactician, and even Corrin and Xander recognize that Leo is an expert. The former even asked for his tutelage in leading an army.
To those important to him, Leo is exceptionally devoted. While he never received his mother's love, being the child of a concubine who only used him as her ladder to a higher status, Leo still found familial affection in his father and his siblings. The true Garon is dead and gone, so his siblings come first and foremost. He would do anything for their happiness, going so far as to accept the heavy responsibility of being crowned king because Camilla did not want to be queen. Despite Corrin's betrayal, Leo still loves them even though he had to steel his heart for their confrontation. Leo, under all that armor and his cool exterior, is quite a softie.
The only other strained relationship we see from him is that with his own son, Forrest, who dresses unconventionally and Leo had a difficult time accepting it. He went so far as to keep himself at a distance, unwilling to see his own son in the deeprealm. It's something that Leo is reprimanded for by Elise, and that snapped him out of the prejudice he holds. At least Leo is capable of recognizing his errors and takes measures to correct them, eventually proving that he is a good father as well. It should probably be noted that if he were to marry Corrin in the Revelation route, their ending mentions that Leo is unpopular with the Vallite commonfolk. It's telling of how people perceive him as a figure seen from afar and how different he is when they get to know him. There's that cold exterior, but he's also perfectly capable of fostering lasting friendships.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Leo is, first and foremost, a mage. While he is also proficient with a sword and is able to wield it as well as anyone according to his dark knight class in the game, his magic affinity is stil the most prominent. He is adept at all sorts of magic, being able to disspell illusions, even dabbling in teleportation/dimensional magic when he sends Corrin and their entire army to another place instantaneously. His personal tome, Brynhildr, is a powerful weapon whose core is rooted in gravity and life. His attacks come in the form of trees sprouting up from the ground to attack his opponents. That's about all I can say on the matter because it's not like FE animated veins stabbing into people's bodies which I assume is what really happens.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Leon Oswald
AU AGE: 19
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: None really. He’s extremely normal looking without his armor on.
AU NAME: Leon Oswald
AU AGE: 19
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: None really. He’s extremely normal looking without his armor on.
AU HISTORY:
Leon was born out of wedlock to a politician from another country and a young aspiring model. It’s standard and cliche as it goes - his father can’t jeopardize his career or marriage, and his mother really just wants to be successful no matter what it takes. She was paid a settlement fee to keep everything quiet which she accepted because it was a sizeable amount at the time. Leon was an undesired child by both parties, and his childhood reflects that.
His mother, still trying to make it as a model, doesn’t spend much time (or at all) with her baby. He was passed from nanny to nanny and thrown into daycare as soon as he was able to walk. It was a loveless relationship with his mother and he never really knew affection outside what his teachers gave. Leon became closed off early on, and used books as an escape and distraction. He gets jealous of others who have siblings and caring, attentive parents.
Eventually his mother’s career declined to the point where they have to move. They moved to Recolle when Leon just entered middle school. Things aren’t much different here than they were. His mother still works most of the day, and spends the rest of her time dating, finding men who would be able to support her. Leon still does extremely well in school and places first most of his years. He’s rather popular if only because of his looks and intelligence, but is hard to approach. He has very few friends, but those who are his friends he’s loyal to them. All his time is spent on studies and pampering his cat, Nyx. While in high school he saved up money by tutoring. He’s known for very strict, almost spartan methods, but his results are great.
Leon graduates high school a year early armed with a full ride scholarship to Recolle University. He his mother’s permission to move out by himself by her signing his lease. Some time in his 18th year he was discovered by one of his mother’s agency acquaintances and was invited to start modeling. It’s more of a side hobby and a part time job, a way to further support himself and his studies. He doesn’t enjoy it much but unfortunately it pays well and all he has to do is stand there looking pretty. He has a growing popularity as a model, but doesn’t want to be known by that, and is considering quitting as soon as he gets a proper job in the field he likes.
Currently he’s in his second year of university and double majors in Biochemistry and Business. School work and two part time jobs keep him extremely busy, so he has even less time for making friends or any other relationship. Leon is always goal-oriented though, and he figures there’s always time for that later.
Established CR:
Takumi Minamoto (permission granted) – his kind of sort of best friend, or something close to it. They met at school and have similar interests, but are both too busy to spend much time together. Still, Takumi is the closest thing to a best friend that Leon has right now.
AU PERSONALITY:
Leon lacks the inferiority complex he would have had since he’s an only child in this AU. Still, he longs for actual familial warmth, but is also reserved and doesn’t like to get too close to other people. There’s a small amount of resentment he holds for his mother for not giving him the time of day or the attention he deserves, but he doesn’t pursue that relationship because he doesn’t hold his mother in very high esteem. He’s always curious about who his father might have been, since she mentions him but never goes into detail, and it’s always more complaints than anything else positive. Because of that, Leon doesn’t have high opinions of adults.
While prince Leo is charismatic because he has to be due to being royalty, Leon doesn’t have that kind of obligation. He’s more of a loner and prefers to work by himself. At the same time he’s capable of objectively recognizing other people’s worth. The only thing keeping him from enthusiastically cooperating with others is the fact that he hasn’t met many people worth cooperating with. He’s drawn to people with high intelligence and capabilities like himself. He doesn’t consciously act haughty, it’s just the way he carries himself. If anyone bothers to get close enough, he’s pleasant and amicable, understanding at his best. He also gives great advices.
Once Leon makes a friend he’s very loyal. Friends are the siblings Leon yearns for but doesn’t have. He wants to be able to confide in someone. He wants to be able to feel close enough to another person to share his insecurities. Leon hates showing weakness even to himself, and absolutely loathes it when others catch him at a moment’s vulnerability. He wants a lot of other things, like his mother’s love, being pampered just for a little bit, just to see what it’s like. He considers it very childish however, and doesn’t like to admit it to himself.
As he lacks the time, he finds a little solace in animals. His mother let him have a pet when they moved to Recolle, and Leon became very attached to his cat. Now that he’s moved out and not have to worry about tuition, he’s considering getting another. Currently his hobbies are reading and gardening, the latter because he finds it soothing, and he’s always fond of greenery. He keeps a small hanging garden on the balcony of his apartment, and has a great green thumb.
